Jobseekers Encouraged To Learn Languages

Jobseekers are being encouraged to develop their language skills in order to get ahead in the competitive market.

An Irish Employment Monitor shows a 4% drop in the number of professional jobs available in Ireland in the last month.

The figures also show that an extra 12% of professionals entered the market during that time.

Karen O’Flaherty, Operations Director at Morgan McKinley, says being able to speak another language gives you a distinct advantage.

“The areas that have certainly continued to be in demand since the beginning of the year are across IT, development, project managers, any of the financial services with language skills.

“Two or three languages are certainly in high demand at the moment.”

The amount of unpaid overtime being done by Irish workers looks to be on the increase.

A survey by Peninsula Ireland has revealed that 67% of workers say they occasionally spend time working evenings and weekends without pay to cope with their workload.

It’s also showed that employees are using mobile devices to keep up to date with work while they are technically ‘off’.

43% of these workers feel their bosses do not acknowledge the overtime that they have done.

Small Business Show 55 Part 3: Big Bin Waste Disposal

On this weeks Company Focus we’re talking to John O’Connor from Big Bin.

The Bigbin Company was founded by John O’Connor and the Kavanagh family in 2010.  The concept of the “pay to use” waste management system was in response to public demand for a more cost effective and convenient method of waste disposal. They saw  the old system of annual waste contracts and specific collection days  inconvenient for many people, particularly households who only produce average amounts of domestic waste.

John explains to us how it works and how it could save money on annual waste disposal costs for households.

Mary Mulvey joins from Eco-Tourism Ireland and why explains why Ireland could be a global player in this emerging sector of tourism.

Eco-Tourism Ireland is an organisation set up to stimulate the development of ecotourism countrywide. To achieve these ends we have facilitated the development of an ecotourism quality label that we hope will stimulate the development of new ecotourism experiences in Ireland and at the same time defend the ethical values of existing ecotourism operators.

In addition the label has been designed to guide visitors travel choices and help them to choose promoters of ecotourism products and the experiences they have on offer.
