Team Hermes, a group of young Irish entrepreneurs from the north west, have won the Microsoft Imagine Cup in the software design category at an awards ceremony in New York.
The team developed software that helps prevent cars from crashing on dangerous roads. They looked at road safety statistics and found that accident reports never have real time data that can help to explain events. They have developed an in-car system which links to your mobile phone, this in turn sends the information to cloud computers which can act upon erratic driving. It is to be an early warning system for cars and drivers. The World Health Organisation says traffic accidents will be the fifth leading cause of death by 2030.
An Irish team, from Sligo IT, beat off competition from other teams across the globe including China, Jordan, New Zealand, Romania and the United States in the final.
The theme of this years competition was to imagine technology that could solve the world’s toughest problems.
